What is a Chiropractic Treatment?

There is often confusion and misconception about what a Chiropractor does and how Chiropractic treatments differ from other similar treatments. Many think it is just about the spine, but in fact it’s about the whole body.
Explaining how the spine works image
An underlying principle of Chiropractic treatment is that an optimally functioning nervous system facilitates a healthy life. The body is in the best place to be able to heal itself when the nervous system is functioning at its best.
Chiropractors practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment. By offering expert drug-free health care, dietary and lifestyle advice, chiropractors can help you to lead a healthy life and achieve and maintain optimum wellbeing.
Chiropractors focus on the spine and the neuro-musculoskeletal system and investigate how conditions affecting these areas can affect your health and wellbeing.
Chiropractors are trained to assess the neuro- musculoskeletal system and identify restrictions, imbalances and dysfunction. Our care involves spinal and peripheral joint adjustments and mobilisations, application of soft tissue treatment and advice on exercise, self-help, diet and lifestyle where appropriate.Chiropractors do not use medicines or surgery and the gentle manual approaches we use are extremely safe and comfortable to receive.

The McTimoney Approach to Chiropractic Treatment

The McTimoney approach to chiropractic treatment was developed by the late John McTimoney over 50 years ago and is taught only at the McTimoney College of Chiropractic in Abingdon, near Oxford, or at the newest facility in the centre of Manchester. It is well known for being a precise, ‘whole body’ approach to chiropractic care.

The gentle nature of the McTimoney chiropractic treatment makes it suitable for people throughout their lifetime from infants to those in later life.

New Patient Consultation

We will discuss in detail the reason for your attendance and a full medical history will be taken, We will take your vitals such as Blood Pressure, Pulse Rate, Respiration Rate, Temperature and Oxygen Saturation Levels.

If indicated as necessary, we will complete a full neurological examination and undertake systems screening of the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system and undertake an abdominal screen and a lymphatic screen.

We will then complete a physical assessment, including asking you to do some active movements, doing some passive movements (where we will move your joints for you) and some orthopaedic testing depending on the reason for attendance at the clinic.

A week after the initial consultation you will be invited back to attend a Report of Findings (ROF) Appointment, where research conducted on behalf of your presenting symptoms will be discussed with you. A treatment plan will be also suggested to you. Once the initial phase of care has been completed (usually around appointment 4 or 5), a complete re-assessment will be undertaken, and the results discussed with you.

The first appointment will also include a first treatment is appropriate. This initial appointment should take between 60 and 90 minutes dependent on complexity of the case/condition.

Follow Up Appointments

During each subsequent appointment, we will check spinal and pelvic alignment and adjust as necessary as well as working specifically on the presenting condition.

This will include a range of chiropractic adjustments which we will discuss with you first and explain thoroughly what we are doing and why. Soft tissue work in the form of massage or mobilisation may also be undertaken as appropriate with the aim of:

  • Increasing the mobility and range of motion of joints
  • Checking and correcting any pelvic tilts, rotations, or torsion *1
  • Assessing and correcting any spinal misalignments / areas of dysfunction
  • Helping restore the function of the nervous system
  • Increasing blood supply to tissues
  • Relieving muscle tension

*1 (where the sides of the pelvis have twisted in opposite directions).

Dry Needling

Sometimes your presenting condition / injury may respond well to treatment such a dry needling. This will be discussed and can be included in your package of care at no extra cost if appropriate.

What is dry needling?

It is a modern adaptation of traditional acupuncture that is evidence based and widely researched. Western medical acupuncture is mainly practised by health care professionals and therapists, such as Chiropractors, Osteopaths, Physiotherapists, Sports Therapists and Sports Massage therapists as this modality is based around the treatment of pain, dysfunction, or injury.

What can it do?

  • Reduction of acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain
  • Reduce dysfunction and muscular tension
  • Increase localised blood flow
  • Increase range of motion

It can be used to treat fascia, muscle tissue, tendon, and ligament injuries.

FAQs

Can I bring someone with me?

Of course! You are welcome to bring a friend or relative if you would feel more comfortable to do so.

What do I wear?

Ideally shorts or leggings and a vest top, light and thin clothing is ideal so we can feel any hypertonic muscles and areas of complaint easily.

However, gowns are provided if you would rather wear these (or you happen to forget and arrive in jeans 😊).

What if Chiropractic treatment is not right for me?

If there is something that needs addressing outside the remit of Chiropractic care or of particular concern, with your permission I can refer you to your GP for further investigation. I can also refer for private imaging (X-rays – MRI’s etc).

I also work with local Physiotherapists, Osteopaths and Clinical Psychologists and will happily refer you to the right health care professional to achieve the best outcome possible for you as an individual.
